As we approach the end of the financial year how are you feeling? Have you achieved the goals you set for yourself at the start of the year? It is easy to start feeling overwhelmed as the deadline moves closer and closer isn’t it?

I soon know if I am feeling anxious about my work because my first thoughts when I wake up will be about what needs to be done. This is accompanied with uncomfortable feelings that range in severity from butterflies in my stomach to a racing heart. If any of these signs present themselves I know I am on the burnout track and I take measures to reduce my stress load.

But I haven’t always been this way. It’s taken me a bit of trial and error to find out what tools and techniques work best for me.

I have spent the last 30 years devouring books and podcasts, attending conferences, learning and growing… all with the goal of becoming a better woman, mother, and business owner.

Here are some tips and tricks I’ve picked up over the years:

Write it down – I create a list of major tasks to be performed, prioritise what needs to be done and delegate tasks where I can.

Tick it off – I absolutely love to tick things off a list. Even ticking off my shopping list gives me a sense of achievement. So I run my business by lists.

Take time out – I know this may seem counterproductive but when I’m feeling anxious or overwhelmed sometimes the best thing to do is take a walk, or ride your bike if you are a keen cyclist like me and move your body. This always helps to clear my head and then I can come back and approach my work invigorated with fresh eyes.

Last week I had guests coming to stay for a week right at one of the busiest times of year in my business. So I created a list, did the work I needed to do and was able to stay in the present with my guests instead of thinking about what is not done.

These days it can be hard to be truly present. We move fast, and we’re always thinking about what’s next. As a result, we often feel stressed, overwhelmed and anxious.

But life doesn’t have to be this way!

When you live in the moment, something amazing happens. Not only do you feel calmer, grounded and mentally clear… but you actually accomplish more.
